So, I dated a guy for just a couple months in the Spring. We were also friends before we dated (not really good "let's hang out" type friends) but that's besides the point. In May he left for Europe for the summer to work for a company. We obviously did not see eachother the whole summer, but talked almost everyday and for my birthday in June he sent me a really nice and expensive Neiman Marcus terry cloth robe. When he came back in late August we just didn't pick up where we left off and stopped dating. We are still friends, and still talk a few times a week...no hard feelings at all.

Anyway, for my question...his birthday is next month. Do I get him anything? I don't think that would have been a normal thing in our friendship before, so I'm just confused. Any advice!!?? Thanks!..

To be honest, if we are still friends, I would send him a card and offer to take him out for a lunch for his birthday. Lunch is always safe (it is a friendship thing) and if he does not take you up on it you do not loose anything - at least you offered to do something nice...

I like both of dancermay's ideas - card or lunch But do you and the guy live in the same city? If so, then sending a card might be weird. Have you guys hung out at all since he got back from Europe or it has all been phone convo? Do you feel comfortable inviting him to lunch for his birthday? I think it's a good idea, but then again maybe not if you feel awkward or weird to do that, you know?.

No, we do not live in the same city. We live about an hour apart. We haven't hung out yet since he's been back although he did invite me to go sailing but I wasn't able to go...
